Thursday String Idea #6

 Welcome to Week 6 of the

Thursday String Idea!

I am sorry I missed posting last week.

Mark and I were in Maine looking at houses.

The Florida heat is really messing with me and we want to move to a cooler climate.

We did a lot of research before we went.

We knew exactly what we wanted.

And even though our 'dream' cabin turned out to be a dud,

the realtor pointed us towards a dream house we would have 

never looked at because of the price.

Fortunately, since we first saw that house online -

and the time we went to see it last week -

the seller dropped the price $30,000.00 

which made an unattainable house suddenly attainable.

Long story short - the seller accepted our offer and we should be closing on this beautiful home in a little over a month.

Anyway, I am back this week with string #6. You can print the string out here - it is sized to fit a 3 1/2" tile. If you want additional size links, just let me know and I will make it happen.
The tangles I used are fiore and frost flower. It reminds me of the Starship Enterprise for some reason. Hehehehe.

Using a Blind-Sighted String

This week's Diva Challenge is to use what Erin calls a "blind-sighted" string. Just close your eyes and draw a string. Give up your control and just draw blind-sighted. The above shot is a somewhat blurry (but the only one I have) picture of my string drawn with my eyes closed. Hmmm. What to do with it, what to draw?

That was so much fun! I must do another! I started with ixorus and that just laid out a plan for me. It's really a challenge to decide what tangles to use where. A challenge to make them flow together. Many times when we draw a string we already have an end in mind. It's hard to mindlessly draw a string with our eyes open. So. Close your eyes and give it a try. And when you are done, visit over here and link it up to the Diva's Challenge. You'll get some wonderful feedback! String 009

Tangle Patterns is hosting another string this week, the offering of Sue Zanker.

My first tile came together really quick! I decided to just tangle along the string with pokeleaf. Then I added the background of blox - one of my tangles. I'll try to add the steps once I get them drawn out.

Second offering - an assortment of tangles. Cadent, hollibaugh, yincut, swarm, scallops.


Both tiles watercolored with a child's paintset from Wal-Mart. Haha! It works great! I also used Pitt Artist Markers in the first. You can see the string tiles at Tangle Patterns flickr page.

String 008 - Steampunked

At Tangle Patterns, it is time for String 008! This week's string is shared by Hope Martin. Here is what I did:

Steampunk just really calls to me right now. Hopefully you aren't getting sick of looking at it. Let's see. I used some assemblies, some geerz, some barz, and apparently not enough light when I photographed it with my phone. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow.

Music For The Heart

Tangle Patterns' String 007 - I decided to go with a music theme. I was just flipping through some pages of patterns and this is what I came up with. I don't typically leave a bunch of white space, but I kind of liked it this time. Patterns: Msst, melody, variation of puff, and I threw in a keyboard :).

This is the string Linda gave us to work with. The string was shared by Mirjam Baart of Holland.  I basically rotated the string and went to work.

To photograph my tile for post, I went to my sheet music and pulled this one out. I got this music from a great aunt when she passed away. She had some great sheet music! and a pump organ that she played. This is  probably my favorite piece. I love to play this on the piano.

Tangle Patterns String 006

It's week 6 in the Tangle Patterns string fun. Above is the string Linda gave us to work with this week, courtesy of Sandy Hunter, CZT. We take this string and turn it into a work of art. Hopefully :).

I had fun with this string. I turned the loops into a wrecking ball and rotate-able gear. A little of this and a little of that and presto! it's steampunk. My favorite for now. Why don't you join us in this fun? You can see the instructions and the get the string here.

String 005 - it's far out!

Each week Linda at Tangle Patterns gives us a string to tangle. I actually made two tiles today with string 005. Outer space is what I was thinking as I drew this first tile. And it's the first time I've drawn one of the little bean guys! I love it! I used patterns from Zentangle For Kids! (cootie, bean, botto, squid, jetties)

This is the string Linda gave us to use. 

I also drew this second tile. I just went with the line separation provided by the string and filled the spaces. (organza, beaded, hurly burly, betweed, some auras, and sunz (my tangle)

This string was fun to use! I may pull it out again :). All color came from Derwent Inktense Pencils and some water :). If you want to join in on the string fun, visit Linda's page here!

String 004 from Tangle Patterns

Here is the string Linda gave us at Tangle Patterns this week. This string came from Sue Agnew. Our job was to take the string and add tangle patterns.

Ta-da! I added in: organza, ixorus, popsicles, beaded, tweety, and one of my own - sunz. I also shaded - which you can't see that well here, sorry. This was a lot of fun! Thanks, Sue! And thanks to Tangle Patterns and Linda!

Tangle Patterns' String #3

At Linda Farmer's Tangle Patterns we are doing a weekly challenge :). She provides a string and asks us to tangle them as we wish. The string this week (above) was provided by Anne Marks.

I had this watercolored tile left over from our trip last week and decided to use it. I found that it was really hard to transfer a pattern over to a painted tile - I used the pencil technique that The Bright Owl taught me. Didn't work well. I guess the tile was too squishy from the paint, so I free-handed it.


Patterns I used are: crescent moon, chard, caviar, hybrid, shattuck, waves, organza, warped eggs, up and across, zedbra, vache, baton, betweed, and beadlines. Yes, it is a busy tile, but I think it works and flows well together - and I learned some new patterns. Thanks, Linda and Anne, for a fun string!

Diva Challenge #72 and String 002

Diva Challenge #72 this week - Tanglation Nation - Crescent Moon. Our instructions were to use only crescent moon in our tile, no other patterns. This is what I came up with - and I am very happy with it. I first watercolored the tile, set it with my heat gun, then drew the string. Next I penned in circles to use for my crescent moon pattern and added auras.  I changed it up by making some areas dark, and leaving one area un-auraed. Easy peasy!


Tangle Patterns offered a challenge as well. A string was provided for us, we just needed to add the pattern.
