Continuing With Procreate #procreateart #tanglestartsstrings

Alice Hendon, Procreate fun on the iPad using new brushes
So I am pretty much having a blast at nighttime
watching Musketeer reruns and playing with my iPad.
The Procreate app is pretty amazing and I don't even
know how to do very much with it yet.
I imported the image above. (I used it for the
cover of my Tangle Starts Strings book.)
Made with alcohol ink on Yupo.
And I started drawing.
Tangles I used include stack, dandelions and abundies.

 But first I did this.
Hahahahaha!
Playing with brushes.
So much fun!!!!
But I digress.

And I added some other brushes with the paint
spatters. It was pretty awesome to create!

From Hahnemühle Watercolor Paper to Procreate Mandala #hahnemühle #hahnemuhleharmony #procreateart

Alice Hendon, Hahnemühle background converted to Procreate mandala
Still having fun with this Procreate app on my iPad.
So, so much to learn!
I made this last night while listening to TV.
Let me walk you through what I did.
Alice Hendon, Hahnemühle background converted to Procreate mandala
Earlier in the month, I did a product review for the
Hahnemühle Harmony Hot Pressed Watercolour Paper.
You can read the review here.
For this project in Procreate,
I imported one of the backgrounds I made for that
review - using the Hahnemühle Harmony paper.
I put the settings on symmetry and clicked the radial option.
The cool thing about radial symmetry is this -
whatever you draw in one section of the radial grid
automatically appears in all the other sections.
I started in the center by drawing one loop.
The program replicates that one loop into eight.
I just kept adding lines.
Alice Hendon, Hahnemühle background converted to Procreate mandala
I am so in awe of what the program does that I have
trouble remembering what tangles I know.
Hahahahahaha!
I figure loops, auras and copadas are always
a good way to go.
And a mix of straight and curves.
You know . . . for balance.
And I could tell it needed contrast so I filled
some areas in with black.
Alice Hendon, Hahnemühle background converted to Procreate mandala
And just kept building till I felt like it was complete.
Alice Hendon, Hahnemühle background converted to Procreate mandala
Then I moved on to shading.
Still trying to figure this part out on the iPad -
I used the airbrush.
I could also do this in color so maybe
next time I will try shading with a 'color'
instead of grey.
Overall I love how it turned out and I am
ready to give it another go!

Playing With the Procreate App #procreate #digitalart

Alice Hendon, playing with procreate on my iPad, making mandalas
I finally got brave enough to charge my
Apple Pencil and check out the Procreate
app on my iPad.
So much fun!!!
My friend Cindy got me started and this is
what I made in the symmetrical setting.
I honestly don't recall how I added the
shading. I am hoping I can figure that out
the next time I try.
Hahahahaha!
Alice Hendon, playing with procreate on my iPad, using one of my color backgrounds.
For this one I imported a page from my
Tangle Starts book. Everything you see in the
background is actually a gelli plate pull I made
using a stencil. I imported it into Procreate
and used the technical pencil and the gel pen
to add some floral designs.
Kind of quick, spent about 10 minutes figuring
it out. I do love it!
Alice Hendon, playing with procreate on my iPad, making pretty sunsets
This is part of an art piece I made at Robin Mead's
class back in July. I did a quick screen shot of a portion
of it, imported it into Procreate, and added some
tangles with my Apple Pencil.
I even figured out how to draw them in color.
Alice Hendon, playing with procreate on my iPad, making pretty sunsets
Then I started over with the same picture before
tangles, and clicked a link called 'automatic.'
When I touched the pen to the color in the photo -
this is what happened!
Cool!
No idea why, but I love it!
I am easily amused.
I promise I will be learning more about this
app and will keep showing you my fun results.
Heheheheheh!

ATC Letter O Swap #ATC #artisttradingcards #gelliprint #santoro

Alice Hendon, letter O ATC swap, my theme is Ocean
One of the groups I belong to on Facebook -
is gearing up to do a trade with the theme of
Letter O.
We can trade with two people.
Can you guess my theme?
Alice Hendon, letter O ATC swap, my theme is Ocean
Hahaha! Hopefully my theme is obvious!
I know these pictures will appear large on the
computer screen, keep in mind ATCs are 2.5" x 3.5"
pieces of art. You have to figure out what you can
fit into that small amount of space that
will reflect the theme.
For both cards I started with gelli print pulls
I did on water color paper.
I used a stencil and left a bunch of previous
paint on my plate, making some really
cool looking bubbles.
Inked the edges with a teal StayzOn ink pad,
then tangled some airways, printemps and
Shading is graphite, highlights is a white
gelly roll pen.
The sweet little mermaid was part of the
cardboard packaging for some Santoro stamps.
The O tiles, glass flowers and cute little charms were
stuck down with glue dots. Then I put them into
baseball card sleeves to protect them.
An hour's worth of work at tops.
Can't wait to see who I get to send them to!
And where!

I'm looking forward to being part of this group.
Now I just have to find the time.

Two Tangles For You #tangleallaround #alicehendontangles

Alice Hendon, step out for All Boxed Up
I am hoping to transition all my tangles over
to teal boxes like these two.
I just like teal. Hahahaha!
Here are steps for making All Boxed Up
with straight lines and with wonky lines.
Super versatile tangle. You can seriously use it so
many ways. I used it in yesterday's post as well.
Feel free to pin to your Pinterest boards.
Alice Hendon, step out for Ribbon Rose
Ribbon Rose is the most recent tangle I've
published. Designing others for a couple books
I'm working on. So stayed tuned for those.
This past week saw Ribbon Rose featured on
the Tangle Patterns website, where you can
find literally hundreds of patterns to work with.
Here is a link directly to Ribbon Rose.
I will post the YouTube video link at the very
bottom of this post.

I have used it so many different ways, but this
is my favorite!

A Tangle Sampler #tangleallaround

Alice hendon, easy to make watercolor tangle sampler for zentangle patterns
In my Facebook group
we have weekly prompts.
This week's I Dare You! prompt was to make
a tangle pattern sampler using color.
I opted to use my Hahnemühle Watercolor book
and my newly put together watercolor kit.
Alice hendon, easy to make watercolor tangle sampler for zentangle patterns
I started by making some oddly (haha!) shaped boxes
of color. I wanted them to be square but that wasn't
to be. Not so much.
Isn't that a cool little watercolor kit?
I bought the tin filled with empty half pans on Amazon,
then filled the half pans with color from my tubes.
Waited till for-stinkin-ever for them to dry,
then used a water brush to pick up the color
and make the boxes.
The Hahnemühle Watercolor book can be purchased
here

Today I added some of my own tangle patterns
and made a cute little sampler.
I am using this watercolor book to track my
tangle history in patterns.
You can see an entire post about it here
(But no giveaway because that has already happened.)

Reorganizing Take Two #somuchfun #foundgoodstuff

Alice Hendon, reorganizing once more time
In my last post I was showing you how I was reorganizing my art studio.
It was looking pretty good, too.
And then I got an awesome idea for getting more of
my color media out where I could actually see them
and be able to remember what I have.
Hence, Reorganizing Take 2.
Alice Hendon, reorganizing once more time
When we lived in Florida, we had one of these
nifty hanging racks on the back of a closet door and
we stashed boxes and cans of food in it.
Ta-da!!!!!
$29.00 on Amazon and it was here in two days.
This is the perfect way to get my color available where I can
see what I have. And not forget.
And before you get discouraged, I have been collecting
color for almost 6 years now.
Just so you know.
All these bottles of color were previously stashed in
drawers and in pretty boxes. Where it was not visible.
So easy to forget what
I have and just keep going back to the items
on my rolling carts.
Alice Hendon, reorganizing once more time
By moving things out of boxes and onto the back
of the door, I was able to free up a bunch of space.
I now have 2 drawers of alcohol ink.
Yay!!!!
Easier to access and still portable.
I work with these in the kitchen because that room
is better ventilated than my studio.
Alice Hendon, reorganizing once more time
This is far and away the coolest thing I found!
I got this on eBay. A long time ago. It was in the bottom of a drawer underneath a lot of other things.
It was made in England by Page of London.
The lid is a little dented up . . .
Alice Hendon, reorganizing once more time
. . . but the paints inside have never been used.
It's crazy how the colors are all mixed up and in no order.
It is a huge set - the tin is 7" x 12".
I can't decide if I want to use the paints
or
save the paints.
Opinions?
A used and nasty set is going for $39.00 on eBay.

And today - I continue cleaning up.
Cause I made a serious mess yesterday.

Reorganizing My Studio #whatamess #mystudio #whereiwork

Reorganizing once again because I can't find something.
It is hard to find certain things because I keep
thinking about where they were in Florida.
Every inch of this room is utilized for storage.
And it does get a bit out of control from time to time.
Recently, I have had several people ask about
my studio, so I thought I'd show you some photos.
The above shot was taken from the doorway.
No, I did not paint the pictures over the TV.
They are the art of Jasmine Becket Griffith.
I got them at Disney Springs.
Of course Tinker Bell is my favorite!
Mostly I use the TV to listen to the radio.
Hahahahah!
Those white cabinets came from IKEA.
Of course.
The boxes on the shelves are filled with various paints and inks.
I am working on a system to get them out in the open where I can actually see what I have.
The white enclosed cabinet is the shipping station for my store.
That next chest with the colored drawers came from
Hobby Lobby. They still carry this cabinet.
That's just part of my lunchbox collection up top.
Down the right-hand side is where I actually work.
The two tall black cabinets came from Hobby Lobby
and the rolling carts full of ink sprays are
from IKEA.
I have carpet on half the floor.
That way if I have a mishap with color -
it doesn't get on the hard wood floors.
Wow! I'm just noticing how cluttered things were
in these photos. It looks better now. Honest.
My store is located in the closet. All the shelves are full.
In both directions - left and right and out of sight.
I have been pulling things out in order to downsize.
I'd really like to get out of the shipping part of the store and go all digital.
I have a rack coming that will hang on the inside of the closet door.
I am going to put as much of my color as will fit
on the shelves so I can actually see and
grab without having to move a lot of things.
Some more of my lunchboxes, Funko Pop figures
and my Zen the Zebra from Zebra Pen where
I am an Artist Ambassador.
I've put together and published three books
from that desktop, using that computer
and all these supplies.
Tangle Starts has all full color pages -
similar to what you see on the cover -
ready for you to just add your line work to.
Or use as an art journal or for collage work.
Tangle Starts Planner is set up in the style
of a bullet journal with heavy focus on the
tangler and tangling art.
It has 106 new tangle patterns and plenty
of places to store your favorite patterns and
for you to draw and tangle away the days.
Tangle Starts Strings is my most recent book.
There are 378 pre-drawn strings so all you have
to do is add the drawing.
That hard first step of setting up your string
has already been done for you.

I am currently working in stages on four more
books for the tangle artist.
They will round out my Artangleology Series
More info on those later.
This concludes my studio tour.
Hahaha!
I hope you enjoyed it.
And I promise,
it is cleaner and more picked up now.

My Tangle Starts Strings This Week #tanglestartsstrings

Alice Hendon, Tangle Starts Strings https://www.amazon.com/Tangle-Starts-Strings-String-Every/dp/1719180806/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1534510947&sr=8-1&keywords=tangle+starts+strings
is my most recent book.
The cover states there is a string for
every day of the year, when in fact there
are some bonus strings.
You get a total of 378 strings already drawn
for you in this book.
And it is so easy to use!
Alice Hendon, a page completed in my Tangle Starts Strings book available on Amazon.com
There are four strings per page,
at 3.25" square they have plenty of space
for you to add your tangles.
You can easily complete a square in one
sitting. I worked on these over the past
week and I just noticed I did not add
printemps to the first tile.
Weird. Cause I always use printemps.
Hahaha!
I gave you space under each tile to record
the names of the patterns you used.
Or to make any notations you wish.

I used the heavier full-color paper for this
book, even though the bulk of it is black and
white. This will allow you to work without
worrying about bleed through on your pages.
You can read more about the book here

What are you working on?
We are headed into the weekend,
we will probably be doing some ATV riding.
Have fun!

Disc Bound Journaling #hahnemühle #hahnemühleharmony #peerlesswatercolor

I made a disc bound journal!
Awesome!
In a post you can see here, I show you in
great detail what I did with the journal.
The paper I started with was 140 lb. hot pressed
watercolor paper called Harmony, and it is
made by Hahnemühle Fine Art.
The pages were roughly 9" x 12".
I cut each page into 4 sections of 4.5" x 6".
The reason this is called a "disc bound" journal is
because the pages are held together with special
little plastic discs that allow for easy page
turning. They also allow for easy removal of
pages to work on one at a time.
You can move the pages around and change the
order, which I did many times.
I even changed the size of the discs because
those pink ones were too large for this project.
I am going to walk you through my favorite
page in the journal and show you how to make it.
I removed one page from my book.
Those scraps of colored paper are actually
bits of highly concentrated water color.
These were bits I cut off other sheets in the past,
and kept because even a little 1/2" x 2" scrap
will give me lots of color to work with.
To that add one water brush filled with water.
I am no watercolor wonder, but anyone can use
these swatches - I promise!
It is as easy as rubbing your water brush across
a bit of the peerless swatch.
That immediately picks up the color that
you then 'paint' onto your page.
There is seriously no rhyme or reason to the way
I work, I just use the colors I like and put it
down in patches.
They can blend into each other if I want.
Or they can stay in their little areas if that
is what I want.
I let this dry for a couple hours.
I could have sped the time up with a heat gun
but really - I had 31 other pages to work with.
When I came back to this - I used a
and started tangling in sections.
I filled the darker pink sections with printemps.
A couple of the blue sections, too, apparently.
Hahaha!
And I just continued adding tangle patterns.
I try to stay with specific color blocks and let
the shape of the color block act as my 'string.'
You can see I did this with crescent moon and
Then I looked to identify places where colors side
by side could use a cross-over type of tangle
like arukas
That is the one with the small black circles and the
lines that reach across colors and join with
other circles.
Once I was happy with the tangle patterns I added,
I went back with a white gelly roll pen and added
highlights to sparkle the printemps.
Adding this page back to the disc bound journal
was as easy as laying it top of the other pages
and popping the slotted holes back over
the discs.
Easy peasy and done with one page!

The Hahnemühle Harmony
Hot Pressed Watercolour Paper can be
purchased here

Have fun playing! If you make a disc
bound journal, I would love to see it!
