Diva Challenge #78 - Auraknot

Photobucket
This week's Diva Challenge was to practice, and get familiar, with Zentangle's new pattern - Auraknot. I watched the video you can see here It made perfect sense. Then I picked up a pen and tile and went to work. Let me tell you I was so confused. I did mark my first point like Maria suggested, and that is the only way I was able to complete the above tile.

As I looked at it, I realized it was hard to tell where the auraknot was - because of all the 'aura's I drew around it, so I went over the basic outline with a thicker pen.

Not totally happy with my results, so I did another. I think I like this one better.

Then, I decided to add a triangle into the background like they show on the video clip. I like this and I probably should have stopped here . . .

. . . but I'd been wanting to try something with pencils that didn't involve water. I like the way this looks - at this stage.

Overall I am OK with my first attempt with auraknot. Truthfully, I got better results than I thought I was going to get - hahaha! It is a bit intimidating, but oh so beautiful when done right.

  1. Each step is fun to see. It becomes easier with practice as Maria said in the video it eventually can be done without thinking...., I's surely not there yet. For your beginning attempts I love what you have done!

  5. Thanks for sharing all of these. Amazing how easy it looks on the video but it's harder in practice. I love all your step-outs. My favorite though is the third one -- it looks like it wants to break free and fly!

  9. Nice to see how you improve this 'skill' of Auraknot. I prefer the third one; the footlights are well chosen.

  12. I love your progression, and all the versions. It is one that you can get lost in! I had to count each parallel line set to try to figure out where I was! Boy, your version with the spotlights is really spectacular! I like the blue triangles, too

  13. I think they are all lovely. I understand your frustration, though, when trying to learn this one. I finally got it, but it wasn't easy, and I wanted so badly to use a ruler (oh horrors), but I persevered freehand and it finally came together; but without Maria's mark and turning the tile, I'd never have gotten it. My ffavorite of yours is the one where you added the color. It sings to me.

    1. thanks, linda, that mark is critical - i'd be so lost if i didn't have that little mark to come back to. and i'm still working with the pattern - and it is coming a little easier.

  14. I did the same thing you did--I got so caught up in the aura, I took it outside the knot and it was lost...but it was fun!! I really like the last one, the color's beautiful and the knot worked great! Nicely done!
