Zebra and Hahnemühle work well to make my tangle patterns pretty and convenient, Alice Hendon
If you are a tangle artist looking for a way
to organize your patterns,
please read all the way through to the end
for an awesome GIVEAWAY!
But first, let me show you how I am storing
my favorite tangle patterns.

 Is this cool or what?
Does it look like something you might be
interested in?
Let me explain it to you step by step.
I began with this fabulous watercolor book
I am currently using some of the Hahnemühle
product line and posting tutorials showing
various ways to use them.
I will be posting more about this book
in the near future but for now let me show you
this project and tell you how the book performed.

I will include links further in the post in case
you'd like more information about the watercolour  book,
or if you'd like to purchase one for yourself.
For this project, I chose the landscape format in
a book I purchased myself on Amazon.com.
Hahnemühle has graciously given
me a copy for this giveaway.

I began by sketching out 1.25" boxes on a couple
of the pages. I did the boxes differently on each
page because I couldn't decide which format I
wanted to try. So I tried them both and liked them
both.
The Watercolour Book has 30 sheets with 60 work surfaces.
If you set up your boxes the way I have -
you can store 540 total tangle patterns in this book.
If you set up all your pages like my first one with 10 boxes,
you can store 600 patterns.
If you set up all your pages like my second with 8 patterns,
you can store 480 patterns.
No matter which way you go - that is a whole
lot of tangle patterns at your fingertips!

Then I started adding some watercolor.
These first two pages were made using a set of
regular school aisle kids' watercolors from WalMart.
I like to show that you can use affordable
product to make beautiful art,
as well as the more expensive watercolor sets
available on the market.

I tend to splash watercolors on with lots of water.
For this project though - I needed more control.
I used a 1/2" flat brush to stroke lines of water
between and around the rows.
Then I used a small round brush to just drop dots
of color into the wet places
and let the color run and bleed.
I added more color where I thought I needed it.

I even got a little crazy adding more than
one color to a page.
Notice that I have the edges of the pages
held in place with small binder clips.
If you don't have binder clips, paper clips would
work also.
You work with what you have.
And notice I stayed away from painting in the
boxes as much as possible.

Kind of rough looking but I like it.
Binder clips - the reason you use these is to hold
your paper flat,
to help work against wet curling page edges
or dimpling.
I didn't have a lot of that happen with this book.
It worked pretty well with the amount of water
I used.
And the book comes with an attached elastic band
that secures the book closed.
That will help smooth your pages back out.
I used a heat gun to dry the color faster -
because I am impatient -
and then I used the elastic band over night.
The next morning, my pages were flattened and
smoothed back down and now they are are
as flat as they were when I purchased the book.

I watercolored several sets of pages but I think
this one is my absolute favorite.
And now that I think about it -
that is probably because of the colors I used
as opposed to how it looks.
Hahahaha!
Yep!

I also used the WalMart school watercolors on this
set of pages.
$1.98 or something similar.
Once your color is totally dry,
use a paper towel to lightly buff over the pages
to remove any residue of color that might
want to clog your pens.
To draw around my boxes, I used a

giveaway.

I found that setting each box apart with that thin
black line really emphasizes the pattern you
draw within.

Hahaha!
Love my little Zen!
Zen is the Zebra Pen mascot!

I began drawing by thinking about which tangle
patterns I am most likely to use again.
Which are my favorites,
the ones that make me happy.
And the ones that keep me challenged.
And I started filling them into the boxes.
Super important point:
label each box with the name of the tangle pattern
AND
the name of the designer - if you know it.
It is always right to give credit where credit is due.

Notice I also used the color space to document
some of the flowing, larger tangles.
Ones that really wouldn't work well in
a 1.25" box.
Now when I sit down to tangle
I don't have to wonder . . .
do I actually know any tangles???
Hahahaha!
It happens to all of us at one time or another.
Our brain shuts down and we think we have
been replaced with a mindless robot.
Grab your tangle organizer and start looking.

Here is that set of pages I started this post with.

Love me some bright beautiful color.
You will notice nothing in this book is shaded.
Personal choice.
I do shade my artwork,
I just made the decision not to shade
in this book.

For the last set of pages I am showing you -
I used my favorite Schmincke watercolors
For some extra color, I decided to add a pop here
and there on my tangles themselves.
Jane Davenport Mermaid Markers
were handy and easy to use for a little color.

I really love the Schmincke watercolors.
Pricey but such beautiful results!

So.
How did the Hahnemühle Watercolour Book
hold up to my test of water?
Fantastic!
The pages are flat with no bleed through,
no dimpling,
and any slight curling I had is now gone.
I am even working on a piece of watercolored
Zentangle Inspired Art on a couple of the pages.
No one said you had to strictly use this book to organize tangle patterns.
You can "art" in the book, too!
But that will be part of another post.

  4. Super method of organising & so portable too. The boldness of monochrome Eye-wa provides such a good foil for the colourful Ringz in your final piece. Thank you too for the way you give of your time & knowledge so generously.
