Jenn at Just Add Water, Silly, is hosting the Artist's Play Room again this week! Jenn is Canadian and in honor of Canada's birthday - this week's theme is All Things Canadian. Those of us here in the USofA could do a USA theme if we wanted to. I grew up in Newfoundland, and for many years had dual citizenship. I decided to go Canadian for this challenge. My drawing is above. Here's a break-down.
Depending on where you live, Canada has huge deer, caribou, moose - I went with the deer. I never saw any caribou in the part of the country I lived in, but I saw lots of moose and deer.
To represent the Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, I added a totem pole, some flower fields, and some water. Drawing these two pages and picking just the right tangles to fill the areas was a challenge all by itself.
Then I used Pitt Artist's Markers and my Derwent Inktense Pencils and watercolored my picture. I love the way this looks like a snowy, wintery dawn.

Tangles used: feagle, pais, sproing, papyrus, fractal tree, buttercup, flutter, sag, angel fish, keeko, pokeleaf, hibred, florz, rags, and printemps.

These are great... my parents are heading to Newfoundland quite soon and my hubs is dad jealous as Republic of Doyle is his favourite show... every episode he says... look how gorgeous it is we have to go there... and not just once an episode... about three times... the rest of us are ready to kill him, and one day we will get there and get to see a moose... I really really want to see a moose...fun drawings...xx
ReplyDeletetracey - i want to go back to newfoundland, too! and take my husband - he'd love the wildlife! you should go if you get the chance - and take a sketchbook or something - so you could come home and paint some beautiful pictures for me to see :)

DeleteOoh this is so good. There is so much work in them. I remember visiting some gardens in Vancouver back in the seventies and they had the totems, wonder if it was the same one?

DeleteAlice I love the black and white versions showing clearly all the tangles! I started learning about Zentangles last Dec.(2011). I don't always remember all the "rules" about strings and shading and especially about stroke repetition in order to achieve a pattern. Would you be able to send the link that you sent to Nessie...unless it is Tangle Patterns.com. I get some of those but don't have instructions on how to do all the patterns. Your colorized versions are wonderful, too. Just enough color.

Deletethese are really terrific Alice, both the deer and the totem are awesome. So cool that you were raised Nuffie, one of the two best places in Canada, east and west makes the best people. My best childhood friend is from Newfoundland and I so miss hearing her accent!

DeleteOMG, your tangles are so precise and sharp - I just love your overall design. Isn't it cool how using the right tangles can give the impression of landscape or flowers or wind in the sky? I dabble in it as well though haven't done any in a while....you've reminded me how versatile it can be. thanks for the visit.
