Sunz, New Step Outs

Sunz is a tangle I started drawing a couple years ago. I have some step-outs on my pinterest board and buried here in my blog, but figured now that I know how to draw better step-outs, I would give it another go.

This is the actual piece of art I designed sunz for three years ago.

It was one of the very first zentangle inspired

pieces I drew. 

That wall behind the sunz, is another tangle of mine called crete.

My drawing skills have developed a bit in three years, too.  Hahahaha! Here is a piece I tangled this afternoon, featuring sunz!

Floral Color

Recently, I posted the black and white version of this tile as part of a weekly challenge. You can see the post here.

This is what I started with. Some fescu, some mooka,  some sunz, some printemps, some tipple, and some flora. All tangle patterns with a bunch of aura-ing. Then today I added color with Grumbacher transparent watercolor pans and some Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils. Highlights came from a white gelly roll pen. 

Lots of fun and super easy to draw! Soon I will provide a step-out for flora. Hopefully :). Have a great week!

Floral Challenge #14 at Joey's Place

Last night on facebook I posted the above picture at The Creator's Leaf. I was just starting on the new weekly challenge that Joey runs over at MadeByJoey's. This week's task was to tangle some flowers, or use patterns that resemble flower parts, or use a flower shaped string. I decided to go floral - they are some of my favorite things to draw! And literally everything you see in this picture is a tangle pattern, several with auras. (Auras are those black areas that surround and mimic/aura the tangle itself.)

I used my Stillman & Birn 7" square Zeta Series sketchbook and a Sharpie fine point pen. For patterns I used printemps, flux, tipple, mooka, sunz, fescu, and flora. Lots of loopy, swirly, yummy garden fun!

Diva Challenge 99

This particular Diva Challenge involved looping your border on all four sides. I tried and tried and tried to overlap my loops, but my hand just did not understand what my brain was telling it to do. I finally gave up trying to overlap and settled for a loop on each side of my string. This was an interesting challenge, although I doubt I'll ever try this again. Ha! definitely worth trying once :).

The Garden

I come to the garden alone While the dew is still on the roses, and the voice I hear falling on my ear the Son of God discloses.

Austin Miles, 1912 ~ I didn't start out with this song in mind, it just seemed to fit when I sat down to make this post. We've had a lot going on in our lives lately and I've spent some time wishing my dad was still alive. I think he'd be thrilled to see my son and his wife as they prepare for their first child. I believe Dad would be excited for my daughter as she begins her journey to a career in the pastry industry. Dad would be proud of both my children. I can see him now sitting in his rocking chair, one foot tucked up under the other leg, pushing and rocking with his right foot. This song was one of his all-time favorites. So I'm not really surprised that this song popped into mind. He's been gone almost seven years, but it's just like yesterday.

Sunz - A New Pattern

Here is my pattern Sunz, a very basic flower design that begins with drawing a half circle on a base line and filling it with tipple. From there you draw rays for three full petals, and 2 partials along the baseline. Draw the petals, then put several in the background. You can make the rays the same length as your petals, or you can make them extend out past that. Here are some examples of Sunz in action:

In this drawing, I extended the rays out past the tips of the petals. I like the way this looks.

In this tile I added an aura around the outer petals - giving sunz a different look.

This tile was a lot of fun! I kept the points of the petals - the rays - shorter here. I didn't want the rays to be competing with the pattern groovy - which you see in blue.

This is one of my favorite drawings so far. Here I extended the rays a small bit and added a white aura around the petals, then filled the outer sections with blue - giving sunz yet another look.

And in this tile you see a little more than half of the flower, and a lot more petals. Sunz worked perfectly on this surfboard. 
There you go. Five different, but very similar, looks for sunz. I hope you will take this pattern and use it to draw something beautiful! And please feel free to pin Sunz to one of your boards!

Diva #77: Fiore di Pietro

Fiore di Pietro, this week's Diva Challenge, for Peter's Memorial Book. This pattern was designed by Rho Densmore as she grieved the passing of her brother-in-law. Rho is putting together a memory book for the family and has asked to use our drawings in the book. Rho, yes, you may certainly use my drawings. What a wonderful thing you are doing for the family! You are all in my prayers.

Above was my two-page spread. I drew this out in my new smaller Smash Journal. The pages are small and compact, fun drawing in these books. Patterns on this page are: fiore di pietro, pokeleaf, and sunz (my pattern.) Coloring was done with Pitt Artist Pens.

Rho's new pattern was a real challenge for me. I spent 3-4 hours drawing this 2-page spread. I'm still relatively new at this and speed is not my friend. My fiore di pietro is different on this page, a variation so to speak. And totally not planned. It just turned out this way :). I do know what I did 'wrong', but I like the two different versions. String 005 - it's far out!

Each week Linda at Tangle Patterns gives us a string to tangle. I actually made two tiles today with string 005. Outer space is what I was thinking as I drew this first tile. And it's the first time I've drawn one of the little bean guys! I love it! I used patterns from Zentangle For Kids! (cootie, bean, botto, squid, jetties)

This is the string Linda gave us to use. 

I also drew this second tile. I just went with the line separation provided by the string and filled the spaces. (organza, beaded, hurly burly, betweed, some auras, and sunz (my tangle)

This string was fun to use! I may pull it out again :). All color came from Derwent Inktense Pencils and some water :). If you want to join in on the string fun, visit Linda's page here!

String 004 from Tangle Patterns

Here is the string Linda gave us at Tangle Patterns this week. This string came from Sue Agnew. Our job was to take the string and add tangle patterns.

Ta-da! I added in: organza, ixorus, popsicles, beaded, tweety, and one of my own - sunz. I also shaded - which you can't see that well here, sorry. This was a lot of fun! Thanks, Sue! And thanks to Tangle Patterns and Linda!

Crete - A New Tangle

This is the first time I've posted a pattern I created. 
I've searched and searched the internet and I don't see anyone else using a similar design.

Fairly simple steps, lots of variation possibilities. One immediate point to address is in step 3 - all the corners are drawn in brown - I have no idea why the internet makes some brown and some black. This is an easy pattern to draw. I like to use it for backgrounds and filler.

I drew this last week at Cedar Key. I think I drew it for a challege, but so much has happened since then that I can not remember! The scripture was from the previous Sunday morning.

We came home to Tropical Storm Beryl. What better time could there be to work on drawings? I finished the crete section, and added some color with Pitt markers and Gelly Roll Glaze pens. I also used sunz (my own pattern,) mura for the rocks, kloonz, and beams.

Surf's Up, Dudes!

It's Zendala Dare time again. Zendala Dare #4, actually. 

On Friday, Erin posted this zendala for us to tangle. Well, when I looked at it, the first idea that popped to mind was surfboards!

So, you might ask if I'm a surfer. Hahaha! I watched Surf's Up - the movie, does that count? Actually, I'm a little old for that sport, but I do love the ocean! I started by drawing the version above. I like it, but I thought it needed some color. Surfboards are typically colorful! So I used my Derwent Inktense Pencils and a waterbrush to add some color! Can't you just feel the sand between your toes?

Patterns are Btl Joos, cootie, pepper, Msst, sunz (my own pattern), and some free-hand waves. A zentangle-inspired offering. If you want to check out some incredible zendalas, head on over to the Bright Owl here, perhaps you would like to draw one of your own.

On the Riverbank - Challenge #69

This week the Diva's challenge was groovy, a pattern offered by Eden at Cut'n It Up! Here's my first shot at it. Groovy was not easy for me to draw, it should get easier with practice. In addition to groovy for the water, I used my own flower design that I call sunz, pearlz for the border, and a variation of punch for the riverbank. I watercolored for the first time with my water pen using the Derwent Intense Pencils, and finished it out with some highlights in At You Spica markers.
